Welcome to The Video Game Library Newsletter!
Your definitive guide to the world of Video Game literature
Hey everyone, and welcome to the very first post on The Video Game Library Newsletter. If you’re new here — first of all, thank you for joining. This is a space dedicated to celebrating, preserving, and sharing something truly special: video game literature.
So… What is The Video Game Library?
In short — it's a passion project that got wonderfully out of hand.
The Video Game Library is an ever-growing online database cataloging books about video games. From Art Books and Game Studies, to Novelizations, Cookbooks, GameDev books, Comics, and plenty more — if it’s related to video games and it’s bound between covers, I want it to live here.
Since starting the project in March 2022, it has grown from a personal hobby to an international resource, featuring over 10,000 books in more than 25 languages — with new entries added daily. The goal has always been simple: make it easy for anyone — scholars, collectors, parents, teachers, fans — to find video game books of all kinds.
Whether you’re looking to research the cultural impact of Final Fantasy, find a cookbook inspired by The Legend of Zelda, or read a deep-dive comic adaptation of a beloved retro game — you’ll find it here.
Why Start a Substack Now?
We’ve just entered our 4th year, and it feels like the perfect time to bring all the research and discoveries from The Video Game Library directly to the community — in a more helpful and digestible way.
Up until now, it’s mostly been me and a small team of volunteers quietly working behind the scenes — cataloging books, sharing finds on social media, and steadily expanding the database.
With this newsletter, I want to pull back the curtain and give you a glimpse into what happens week-to-week inside The Video Game Library. What new books have we added? Where have we been focusing our efforts? What unexpected gems have we uncovered? Alongside all that, you’ll get the latest news, reviews, interviews, and highlights from the world of video game literature — all delivered straight to your inbox.
What Kind of Community Am I Hoping to Build Here?
I hope to gather readers, gamers, collectors, scholars, and creators — anyone passionate about the intersection of video games and literature.
This isn’t just for academics, nor just for collectors. It’s for anyone who has ever wondered “Are there books about my favorite games?”
I hope to create a community that shares discoveries, celebrates authors, and digs into the weird, wonderful, and often underappreciated world of video game literature — together.
So, welcome aboard.
Thanks for being here, and I can’t wait to show you what’s next.
Hope You’ll Come Along for the Ride!
